On 30 April 2021 a majority of Building Ministers agreed to include minimum accessibility provisions for residential housing and apartments in the National Construction Code (NCC) 2022 based on the Livable Housing Design Guidelines (LHDG) silver standards.
As a result of these changes new houses will include simple but crucial accessibility features, including:
- at least one step-free entrance door
- wider internal doors and corridors
- toilet on ground level (or entry level).
Beth was invited by the Queensland Department of Energy and Public Works to talk about what these guidelines mean for people living with disability – and how these minimum accessibility standards contribute to a more inclusive society where people like Beth can visit family and friends in their homes.
